In the essay “Two long problems: Two many people, two few trees” Moti Nissani describes the present situation of environment and its impacts upon human beings that are likely to arise in near future. He explains the about different environment hazards as a consequences of degradation of the environment.
The causes of these environmental hazards are many, but the most important are over population and deforestation. Human population is growing at an alarming rate. And this growing population needs more space and food, as result more forests are chopped down. In the past birth and deaths were nearly balanced, but due to the advancement in medical science, modern technology and awareness in nutrition death rates have been greatly reduced but the birth rate is not dropped off yet.
Another equally dangerous problem is deforestation, which is the direct outcome of population explosion. Trees are removed to create spaces to build houses and to grow food for the growing population. Trees are also cut down to make comfort items like furniture, printing papers, hamburger and other products. Deforestation gives rise to various problems like extinction of birds, animals and plants, landslides, soil erosion, danger of weather extremes and other natural calamities.
We can hope for a bright future of this world only if we save forest. The population of the countries like China, Thailand and Egypt, the rate of population growth has dropped down. This can be even done in other countries through education, media campaign, family planning measures, encouragement to preserve forest and certain extent of motivation as well. Alternative sources of energy should be highly encouraged. For example, the smokeless ‘Chuloo’ is used in some Nepali villages instead of firewood.
It is therefore, we must control population growth and plant more trees for the future. We have to develop wisdom and courage to convert our knowledge into reality by conserving the trees. Else, there is no doubt on facing life threatening impacts in the near future.
Important questions and answers:
1. What are the two environmental problems that the writer discussed in the essay. Explain.
Ans: The writer discusses about the increasing human population and deforestation as the two major environmental problems. The date rate has been greatly reduced by the modern technology and awareness in nutrition in the present world but birth rate is not controlled yet. This will cause overpopulation and can cause serious impacts in the future ahead. Trees are chopped down to make comfort items like furniture, printing papers, hamburger and other products for human beings. Deforestation gives rise to various problems like extinction of birds, animals, plants, landslides, soil erosion, danger of weather extremes and other natural calamities.
2. What’s wrong in his view with treeless Nepal?
Ans: According to him, deforestation will severely disturb the balance in weather. Very little rainfall will cause weather extremes and desertification. With no trees, rain water will cause floods in the plains of Nepal and other countries. With fertile topsoil washed away, the cultivable lands will be considerably decrease and this will affect all the people living in the country.
3. What steps should be taken to solve the environmental crisis? Explain.
Ans: Environmental crisis can be solved through education, media campaign, family planning measures, encouragement to preserve forest and certain extent of motivation as well. Alternative sources of energy should be highly encouraged. Strict laws and regulation should be made for the wrong-doers. Trees plantation programs should be conducted in regular interval of time. These methods can be implemented to reduce and solve environmental crisis in large extent.
